Keeping it kind

It is at these times that I have always been taught to “look for the helpers”. When life is truly challenging it brings out the real and varied nature of humans. Our responses are instinctive. They reflect our true selves.

I have seen some appalling behaviour from our species over the past few weeks. People stealing, shoving, fighting, behaving recklessly and inconsiderately. There have been unkind acts and unkind words.

But facing this down has been a tidal wave of goodness. Of people doing the right thing. People choosing to behave with kindness. It has been a great thing to witness.

My neighbourhood has started a Bear Hunt. When the younger children head out for a short circuit of the cup de sac for exercise and sunshine they can try and spot all the Bears that have been placed around people’s houses: in windows, on porches, up trees! They change location daily!

Our parish has created a vulnerable list and people have volunteered to shop, collect prescriptions and make phone calls daily.

My neighbour has delivered fresh veg from his company FREE to all locals.

So much beautiful kindness that was just hidden behind the business and stress of “normal” life!

And then, oh my, then there are the heroes.

The nurses stepping out of retirement. The teachers still working to keep key worker’s children safe and others educated from home.

The supermarket staff, delivery services, long distance drivers still working endless hours and still smiling at the till despite rudeness, greedy thoughtlessness and frustrated customers. Despite knowing that they are at risk.

The public servants still caring for the vulnerable, police and prison wardens still keeping us safe.

The incredible, indefatigable NHS that has  yet again proved its worth a million times over. Staff that show a depth of human compassion that I am in awe of. The selflessness and determination of these individuals is one of the most astounding acts of human kindness I have EVER witnessed. They have worked in adversity, without appropriate funding, facilities or safety measures. They have risked their lives for others.

Yes, we have seen the measure of the human character these past weeks. I am truly humbled by the kindness I have witnessed.

The helpers are out in force. Kindness is wining.

Despite the worry, fear and uncertainty,  that one thought gives me more hope for humanity than any vaccine or cure. (Obviously those would be incredible too!! And hopefully big Pharma will take a path of kindness when thinking about profit or people!)

So if you are struggling with this new existence..... focus on the warm, bright ocean of kindness that is radiating around the world. Feel it, add to it, rejoice in it. Most importantly, sustain it!

Keep it kind.
